Resolve: 4 Unexpected Leadership Skills to Master

by | Administration, Leadership

As a pastor or ministry leader, you wear many hats. That’s an understatement, right? Spiritual shepherd, visionary, counselor, and often an administrator. But in the coming year, leadership demands are shifting. To navigate this dynamic season, it’s time to adopt some unexpected skills that will strengthen your leadership and amplify your impact in ministry.

Here are 4 surprising leadership skills to resolve to master this coming year:

1. Embrace Active Listening as a Superpower

Great leaders don’t just hear; they listen. In a noisy world, your congregation craves connection. When someone shares their heart, practice active listening by pausing, asking follow-up questions, and responding empathetically. It’s not about solving every issue but showing you genuinely care. You’ll become known for trust and a deeper relationship.

2. Get Comfortable With Discomfort

Everything around us is changing quickly, so leading effectively means stepping into uncomfortable situations. Whether it’s addressing tough social issues, navigating conflict, or trying something radically new, being comfortable with discomfort allows you to lead courageously. Growth happens at the edge of our comfort zones— be known for resolving to meet challenges head-on. Prayer can unlock this skill!

3. Dream Bigger Than You Can Do Alone

God calls us to think beyond what we can do alone. Resolve to dream bigger in the new year—whether that’s launching a new ministry, expanding outreach, or setting challenging goals for your church. Big dreams require bold prayers. Learn to rely on God. Spend time asking Him to reveal His vision for your church and trust Him to provide the resources and wisdom to pursue it. Stop relying on yourself. Resolve also to write the goals down and share with other leaders who will pray with you and hold you accountable.

4. Build Digital Discipleship Strategies

Digital isn’t going anywhere. While many pastors are great at in-person ministry, digital discipleship requires a different mindset. Whether hosting online Bible studies, creating shareable devotions, or mentoring through apps, the digital space offers huge potential for expanding your reach. Resolve to embrace technology as a ministry tool—not a competitor. Be known for adding digital ministry!

The new year offers an exciting opportunity for you to grow in unexpected ways. Leadership isn’t about maintaining the status quo but embracing growth for yourself and your church. Step out in faith and live each day to improve and seek God’s direction. The best is yet to come! Happy New Year!
